These past couple weeks in Mrs. Larson’s sixth grade Social Studies class, students have been learning about our first civilizations: Mesopotamia and Egypt and how they affected our culture today. Her students learned about the importance of farming and the need for public laws. These civilizations also gave us our first writing system as well as the discovery of fire. Students worked on many skills within this unit such as debating, researching, writing responses, creating and giving presentations, and proper note-taking.
They are now moving into their unit in Ancient China and Ancient India. For many years, this has become a project-based unit where students are asked to write a rap, song, or poem to cover major concepts. It is amazing over the years how much students will remember when creating music for their facts. One of Mrs. Larson’s favorite thing to do is to send the graduating seniors their song/rap videos not only to see how much they have changed and grown, but also to see what they remember.
