Laws of Motion

In sixth grade science, students in Mrs. Mark’s class have been learning about Newton’s Laws of Motion.  Stations were set up around the classroom to practice and reinforce the concept of inertia, which is the foundation of Newton’s 1st law of motion.  Students learned that an object will only move or stop if a force is applied, along with how gravity and friction affects the motion of objects.  The tennis ball race track helped students understand when an object has a change in speed or direction, it becomes an unbalanced object.  Students also compared the force needed to move and stop a bowling ball and a ping pong ball.  The heavier the object, the more inertia it has, therefore, it will be harder to move and harder to stop.  Lastly, students continue to practice measuring the mass of objects using triple-beam balances.
