Second grade students at the Elementary School learned all about foreground, middle
ground, and background in landscapes. They spent time studying the landscapes of
American Artist, Jen Aranyi, who paints the mountains surrounding her home. In the
background, like Aranyi, they painted the northern lights. They took time to learn about
why the Northern Lights occur and see examples of their different colors. In the middle
ground, they used a hatching technique to create shadows. They used perspective in
the foreground to make the pine trees that are closer look bigger and the pine trees that
are farther away and look smaller. Art teacher Mrs. Brncich said, “the pieces turned out beautiful!”
