Students apply author’s claim to state position on teacher’s Halloween costume

Last week, Mrs. Anderson’s fourth grade class learned about author's claim in reading.

They learned that author’s claim is the author’s opinion, or his or her position on a subject. The class applied author’s claim during a Halloween writing assignment.

Students argued what they thought their teacher’s Halloween costume should be! Some students claimed Mrs. Anderson should be a spider, a ghost, Ms. Frizzle, and a dog. Students not only made claims, but they also used evidence to support their claim.

Students will turn this activity into a fun writing assignment, Mrs. Anderson shared.
