Learning how systems work

Mrs. Piatak’s eighth grade science class is finishing the year with human biology.  The main focus of this unit is to understand how all the systems work together to help each other and to help maintain homeostasis. Students are dissecting chicken wings. “We compared the wing to the human arm.  Students were able to observe skeletal muscles, tendons, ligaments, and bone marrow.  While working with the chicken wing, students could demonstrate why skeletal muscles work in pairs.  They were also able to see how ligaments affect the stability of a hinge joint and what happens if a tendon is torn,” Mrs. Piatak said.
