Sixth grade students in Mrs. Clark's English/language arts class at Coal City Middle School have continued diving into their Poetry Unit. Students read the novel Love That Dog by Sharon Creech. In the novel, the main character learns about poems that take the shape of their topic, also known as concrete poems.
“As a class, we looked at examples of other concrete poems that have been written and published. Then students were tasked with creating their own,” Mrs. Clark explained.
Some of the poems took the shape of hearts, stars, coffee mugs, clocks, trees, and hands to name a few.
“Students have realized that poetry does not have to follow a rhyming pattern, but can literally take any shape they want,” she added.
