Board of Education meeting briefs—January 2025

  • Discussion was held on a school maintenance project matching grant application that if awarded would provide the district $50,000 that would be used to cover costs associated with repairs at Coal City Intermediate School. 
  • Board members entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with the Coal City Community Unit Education Association/IEA/NEA regarding a non-attendance day for the Coal City Intermediate School faculty. 
  • Following a third and final reading, the Board approved 52 revised board policies.
  • The Board approved membership renewal with the Grundy County Chamber of Commerce and Industry at $290; Three Rivers Education Partnership at $750, and the Grundy Economic Development Council [GEDC] at $300.
  • Superintendent Chris Spencer informed the Board that a meeting was held with a group regarding a responsible bid ordinance. No formal action was taken by the Board.
  • Members of the Board of Education commended early childhood center educators Angie Phillips and Tricia Togliatti for successfully completing the maintenance of certification process through the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards. 
  • Board President Ken P. Miller presented certificates commending the exemplary designations assigned to the elementary and intermediate schools as outlined on the Illinois State Board of Education’s Report Cards. The certificates were received from State Representative Jason Bunting and presented  to elementary school principal Taryn Trotter and intermediate school principal Tracy Carlson. 
  • Superintendent Spencer shared information with the Board regarding the Illinois Association of School Administrators [IASA] School for Advanced Leadership program that he has been invited to participate in. 
  • The Board accepted the resignations of Melissa George, special education/PATH teacher, effective at the close of the current school year; Matt Murphy, district maintenance, effective Dec. 31, 2024; Kali Roed, full time classroom aide at the early childhood center, effective Dec. 20, 2024, and Tricia Smith, one-on-one special education aide, effective Jan. 10.
  • Sheryl Strle was employed as a full-time classroom aide at the early childhood center effective Jan. 7.
  • At the recommendation of high school athletic director Brad Boresi, the Board approved the volunteer high school wrestling coaching positions of Zach Berman, Joey Breneman, Jake Masters, Ryan Masters, Bob McGuinn and Nick O'Bert.
  • Enrollment at the close of the first semester was 2,183 students. 
  • The superintendent  announced town hall meetings will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 15 and Wednesday, Jan. 22 to discuss the status  and options for Coal City Intermediate School, and to take questions and comments from the public. The meetings will be held in the Coal City Performing Arts Center beginning at 7 p.m. 

The next meeting of the Board of Education is scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 5. A study session is slated for Wednesday, Jan. 29. Both meetings will begin at 6 p.m. in the Administration Center Board Room.
