Which Rock Would You Choose?

Mrs. Piatak’s eighth grade science classes have been studying rocks. Specifically, differences among igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks. This knowledge was presented in a real life situation: what type of rock would you use to build your dream patio?

Students were given six rocks to compare: limestone (sedimentary), shale (sedimentary), calcite (sedimentary), sandstone (sedimentary), granite (igneous) and slate (metamorphic). Each sample was tested for mechanical weathering and chemical weathering.

Mechanical weathering was tested by using two differing grits of sandpaper and gently rubbing each sample. Chemical weathering was tested by using hydrochloric acid drops on each rock.

Following these procedures, the students decided what type of rock they would choose for their future patios, choosing the rock that held-up against the “elements”.

The students then calculated the cost per square foot for an 8 by 12 foot patio. An eye-opening amount of money for many students!
